WHERE OLD GASTONIA LIVES!

WHERE OLD GASTONIA LIVES! WHERE OLD GASTONIA LIVES!

EPHEMERA

Definition: That which is intended to last for one day; of brief duration; short-lived.
Therefore, ephemera is used as a term to describe newspaper articles, pictures, pamphlets, brochures, handbills, letters, invoices, etc. that were intended for a definite purpose at a specific point in time. Ephemeral material, then, gives us possibly the clearest view of history as it was actually happening. We are looking for any such half-forgotten, Gastonia-themed items you might have that were put away long ago in a desk drawer, shoe box, trunk, or book. Please share them with Gastonians everywhere. We will be happy to scan and return them, or you may send an image as a JPEG e-mail attachment.

"PACEMAKER OF THE PIEDMONT" BROCHURE

Published by the Gastonia Chamber of Commerce and the Gastonia Industrial Diversification Commission in the early 1960's, this brochure highlighted the progress Gastonia had made toward independence from a textiles-dominated industrial base. Ironically, all of the industries featured in the brochure disappeared along with textiles.

CARTER TRAVELER COMPANY AD FROM POCKET NOTEBOOK, 1976 (1).  LOCATED ON LINWOOD ROAD AT SECOND AVENUE.

Gastonia's First Baptist Church and City Hall are pictured above in a Gastonia Gazette advertisement for "Beautiful Music" WBT-FM that appeared in the American Revolution Bicentennial year of 1976. As we examine the faded newspaper clipping, we might find ourselves pondering the eternal paradox of how things change as they remain the same.

Land sale advertising blotter (printing on one side and ink blotter on the reverse) for an auction May 16, late teens or early twenties.
Note the missing "L" in "VALUABLE." The printer would be surprised to know that his error would be viewed some 100 years after the event for which the advertisement was printed.
The property was located in the Modena Mill section of the city off Ozark Avenue.
If anyone knows the exact year or has more information on the sale itself or the Pinnix Land Company of Greensboro and Gastonia (Could it be the forerunner of Pinnix Construction Company?), please
contact us so we can tell the whole story.

    Gastonia, North Carolina.

KOSTEE'S DRIVE IN AD FROM HILL'S GASTONIA CITY DIRECTORY 1963. KOSTEE'S WAS GASTONIA'S FIRST "FAST FOOD" RESTAURANT.

Introductory page from Russell Shaw's Great Smokies - Blue Ridge Guide, published by Russell Shaw Guides, Asheville, N.C., 1948.
Gastonian R. Gregg Cherry was Governor of North Carolina 1944-1948.

1959 advertisement forThe Beacon Drive-In, located at the corner of East Franflin Avenue and Willow Street.

      "POCKET PIG"

"Pocket Pig" (front) savings bank from the National Bank of Commerce 1956.
The bank opened, book-fashion, to reveal slots into which saved dimes could be inserted. The Pig's reverse had spaces for the saver's name and address. This giveaway was a good way to teach young people the savings habit and to groom future customers.

Do you remember the original Putt-Putt course and driving range on US 29/74 West (Kings Mountain Highway)? A hole-in-one on the 18th hole entitled the player to a free round. (You were given an orange ball so you could not win another free round.) Players enjoyed  picturesque views of Crowders Mountain and West Gastonia junk yards. Around 1969 a huge multi-laned sliding board was added and named "Slide-Slide." Riders slid down the hill on straw mats, which did little to protect from abrasions. As a result, "Slide-Slide" quickly and quietly disappeared and was replaced by a second Putt-Putt course. All that remains of this popular first-date destination is the former rest room and maintenance building. It now is the office of a used car lot.

Advertising card from the 1920's-30's for the P.C. (Peter Cash) Eddleman Taxicab Service. (Submitted by Mr. Eddleman's great-grandson, Jerry Blanton.)

Circa 1930 advertisement for the Ludlow Typograph Company, Chicago, featuring Guy F. White, Composing Room Foreman (Mechanical Superintendent) of the Gastonia Daily Gazette, then located on West Airline Avenue, just a few doors from the Armington Hotel.
