RAILROAD CROSSING, FIRESTONE BOULEVARD, SEPTEMBER 17, 2006. DAY BEFORE CLOSURE LOOKING NORTH (1). CLOSING THE RAILROAD CROSSING WAS SEEN AS NECESSARY AT THE TIME IN ORDER TO STEM THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC THAT HAD BECOME AT LEAST, TROUBLESOME AND AT MOST, CRIMINAL. THE ACTION ALSO UNINTENTIALLY ENDED TWO HOPEFUL POSSIBILITIES. FIRST, SINCE THE END OF WWII, "DRAGGING FRANKLIN" (CRUISING) IN GASTONIA USUALLY FOLLOWED A COURSE FROM THE "WHAT-A-BURGER" DRIVE-IN ON EAST FRANKLIN (AND LATER "SHONEYS" AT FRANKLIN AND NEW HOPE ROAD) TO "R.O'S BARBECUE" ON GASTON AVENUE VIA FRANKLIN, FIRESTONE BOULEVARD, GASTON AVENUE, AND THEN BACK AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN UNTIL THE SIDEWALKS ROLLED UP.
